What is a Frittata

You might be wondering what exactly a frittata is.

It’s an egg-based dish similar to an omelet but typically cooked slower at a lower heat. The result is a fluffy and delicious breakfast dish perfect for feeding a crowd or meal prepping for the week.

In this post, I’ll show you how to make a basic frittata with cheese, veggies, and bacon baked in the oven to perfection.

Whether you’re a seasoned cook or just starting, this breakfast dish will impress.

Frittata Base and Mix-ins

The beauty of a basic frittata recipe lies in its versatility.

You can use whatever ingredients you have on hand, whether leftover cooked veggies, grated cheese, cooked meats, fresh herbs, or anything else you prefer.

Ensure that certain mix-ins you add are pre-cooked before adding them to the frittata, as the frittata won’t be in the oven long enough to cook raw meats and tenderize certain vegetables thoroughly.

Don’t be afraid to mix it up and experiment with an array of ingredients when whipping up your frittata.

For all you meat lovers, toss in some juicy sausage, crispy bacon, savory chicken, or ham.

If you’re feeling more veggie-focused, toss in some diced onions, vibrant bell peppers, earthy mushrooms, tender zucchini, hearty potato, or spinach.

With so many options, there’s no limit to the flavor explosion you can create.

Here are a few flavor combinations to get you started:

  • Spinach, feta, and sun-dried tomato
  • Bacon, cheddar, and green onion
  • Roasted tomato, mozzarella, and basil
  • Mushroom, Swiss, and thyme
  • Ham, broccoli, and cheddar
  • Zucchini, cherry tomato, and Parmesan

Frittatas also make for a great meal prep option, as you can make them ahead of time and store them in the fridge for a quick and easy breakfast or lunch during the week.

Frittatas also pair well with sweeter breakfast options like buttermilk pancakes or French toast.

How to Cook a Basic Frittata

Cooking a yummy frittata is pretty straightforward. Simply cook your meat, veggies, or seafood before adding them to the egg mixture.

First, let’s talk about the base of the frittata. My basic recipe uses eggs, milk, cheese, salt, and pepper. From here, the sky’s the limit.

Once everything is combined, pour it into a greased skillet, transfer it to the oven, and cook until it’s golden brown and the center has set.

Once the frittata is done baking, remove it from the oven and allow it cool. Serve the frittata warm with toppings like a dollop of sour cream, guacamole, green onion, or some salsa.

Frittata

Ingredients

  • 10 Eggs
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/3 cup heavy cream or milk
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 cup of chopped broccoli (or vegetable of your choice)
  • 1⁄2 cup mozzarella
  • 1/2 c bacon, cooked and chopped
  • pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup chopped mushroom (optional)
  • 1/2 cup sliced tomatoes (or vegetable of your choice)

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. While your oven is heating up, whisk together the eggs and milk in a mixing bowl, adding salt and pepper to taste.

In a large oven-safe skillet, cook the onions and chopped bacon over medium heat until the onions are translucent and the bacon is crispy.

Remove the skillet from the heat and drain any excess grease.

Pour the egg mixture on top of the onion and bacon mixture evenly.

Next, pour your egg mixture into a greased 9-inch greased skillet or pie dish (or any oven-safe dish you have on hand) and gently stir to distribute the ingredients evenly.

Sprinkle the shredded cheese on top of the frittata and place sliced tomato on the top of the frittata.

Place the skillet in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the eggs are set, and the cheese is melted and golden brown.

Remove the skillet from the oven and let the frittata cool for a few minutes before slicing it into wedges.

Serve while warm. Add toppings like sour cream, guacamole, green onion, or some salsa.
