Cabell Huntington Hospital announces Robert and Lena Shell Outpatient Medical Pavilion

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Cabell Huntington Hospital, a member of Marshall Health Network, proudly unveiled the official name of its new Robert and Lena Shell Outpatient Medical Pavilion today in a ribbon-cutting ceremony held on the hospital’s main campus. The special event included a dedication honoring the Shell family, a prominent Huntington family recognized for its significant commitment to Marshall Health Network.
The new pavilion, once completed, will provide an additional 80,000 square feet of state-of-the-art space designed to enhance patient care and access. Todd Shell, son of Mr. Robert “Bob” Shell, shared heartfelt remarks about his family's legacy, and how the hospital’s dedication to improving health prolonged his father’s life.
“My dad did so many wonderful things, but it does take a village,” Shell said. “He was a Type 2 diabetic for 40 years, and had it not been for the amazing care he received, he would not have been here to do these amazing things. We thought Father’s Day weekend would be a great time to make this announcement to honor my dad’s legacy. We are here today because of the love, dedication, hard work, long hours and absolute devotion to my dad’s health care. We are so grateful to the hospitals, the physicians and the staff of Marshall Health Network."
Paul Ferguson, MD, FAAN, Marshall Health neurologist and chair of neurology at the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine, said this facility marks a new chapter in the journey to enhance health care delivery for the community. In May, neurology and neurophysiology services became available in the new space.
“The Robert and Lena Shell Outpatient Medical Pavilion signifies the unwavering commitment to providing the best care possible,” Ferguson said. “Each piece of equipment and space has been carefully selected and designed to offer advanced diagnostic capabilities, enabling our health care professionals to provide innovative care. Today, we celebrate the promise of a healthier tomorrow.”
Tim Martin, COO of Cabell Huntington Hospital, added, “It’s a great day for Marshall Health Network, Cabell Huntington Hospital, and the patients and community we serve. This building was a concept that began five years ago to better support our region. It furthers our mission as it relates to education and allows us to better serve our patients. Bob Shell shared our vision for health care in this area, and today, we get to see his vision come to life.”
The new five-story pavilion is located adjacent to the hospital’s parking garage with a convenient, covered drop-off area and walkway directly from the parking garage. The $55 million project, led by MIRC Construction Services, LLC, a local construction company based in Hurricane, West Virginia, commenced in August 2021 and is expected to be completed by fall 2024. The remaining floors will house pulmonary rehabilitation, physical therapy, endoscopy, gastroenterology, laboratory, mammography and imaging services once construction is complete.
Following the ceremony, members of the family were given guided tours of the new facility, showcasing its advanced design and the improved services it will offer to patients.
