Lets design a Pirate 'Nation' ( and improve nation designer...please) (2024)

Long story short: Bought Eldorado for this sole reason...
Goes into Custom Nation screen,
Wait?? Theres no Jolly Roger flag? For my Great pirate nation??
How can I be a pirate haven without a flag?

I really wanted to create a semi-historical "nation" of pirates , after some researching including but not limited to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piracy_in_the_Caribbean

But, sadly, there is some limits in the current implementation of the Nation Designer and I have some suggestions that would benefit every user (we talk about them later).

But , for now, help me design this semi-historical pirate haven 'nation'.

Before anything: Start date?
In 1508 we already have Castile's Hispaniola in half of the caribean, or later ?
As for the ones asking, before that there is no 'western' nation nearby so we would consume all Custom Nation Points in just selecting western, and we dont want to be there before the goodies are there to plunder, right?

First tab:
We need a Jolly Roger flag, Please paradox, add it.
Name: Same as capital province (Tortuga sounds better for a 'nation' I think than Port Royal)
Adjective: Pirate (Yarr!)
Collors: All black? Or put some Red for some Rebel looking badassness ?

Second tab:
We need a capital and provinces, What do you guys think (factoring both gameplay and history), should it be Tortuga? or Port Royal?

Leader : Dont forget to select a 0/0/0 leader and put his age at 20 for -18 points to select ideas (YaRR!)

Government: Pirates are surprisingly democratics (for the time at least) and for that we need a republic, and soon we get to the conclusion that we want to be a "merchant" republic for the ability to create "trade" (Pirate) outposts in other nodes arround the world (YARRR!).

Culture: I think we're mostly talking about 'latin' pirates (in the broad sense, iberians and frenchmen) But, i dont want to be a mainstream "Castilan" or "Francien" so I think we should go with the hipsters , like Galician or Gascon. So when we conquer something from the big boys, the people understand us enough to be in the same culture group.

Religion: Catholic, off course (but with great chance to convert to protestant when possible, after all, we can customize our pirate church to our benefits....)

Map Graphics: Would really love to have some conquistadors in black here as units GFX (maybe Paradox can help us in this...). But for now,with vanilla western will have to do...

Now, we want to really create something that will change our game experience.
Lets try to focus on what we think pirates would do (sorry, but no WC for you this time)

Traditions: (lets pick something Okeyish for now because good things cost a lot in the first ideas +50%) Save the good for last.

National unrest - 1,5 (costs 18) - Freedom for everybody !
Montly War Exhaustion - 0,5 (costs 10) - A pirate Life (will be usefull all game long because we will be almost all the time at war, bloackading something or vice-versa)

For National Ideas: (Save the good for last... and dont stack that much DIP or they increase too much...)

1 - Yearly Inflaction Reduction -0.1 (costs 10) - Pirate's Treasure - (What Inflaction? Its all safe in some island...)
We will be taking toons of gold every year from everybody nearby or far(later), and we also near to all that aztec gold...

2 - Technology Cost - 5% (costs 9.0) - Safe haven for heretics and the persecuted - Helps in game overall and its a cheap and good way to not chose a DIP idea.

3 - Mercenary Cost - 20% (costs 30) - Promise of loot ! - Who needs standing armies if we live in islands? Let them try go get here! Yarr!

4 - Stability Cost Modifier - 15% (costs 13) - Tropical Party ! - Helps with keeping the good leaders (and not paying 200 ADMIN to increase stab after...) and its a good and cheap way to increase ADMIN ideas numbers.

5 - Privateer Efficiency - +30% (costs 23.4) - Golden Age of Piracy - Finally what you were expecting, let us dominate the caribean and plunder the world (Seville , Genoa, the Channel ... )

6 - Naval Maintenance Modifier - -15% (costs 16.5) - Pirate Standards - A real money saving, most of the expenses will be naval maintenance...

7 - Global Trade Power - + 10% ( costs 3.3 ) - To caribean, with love - Helps us steer and finally collect all that loot to our homeland.

8 - Ambitions - Yearly Navy Tradition - +1 (costs 16.5) - We rule the sea - Helps keeping the NT as high as it can be.

TOTAL COST = 200.

What do you guys think, seems good? Funny? What would you change?

And now, as I always do, suggestions:
Nation Designer:
- Let me choose the title of my country (I want to be a Pirate Haven), not a Grand Republic...
- Let me choose the title of my leader (I want to be a Pirate Captain) not Grand Consul...
- Let me choose the unit's GFX (I paid for them afterall, did I not ?) ...
- Add more flags, please, look at the CK II ones, you can simple import then, cant you? And please, give me the Jolly Roger flag.
- Let me choose the 'Incresing looting speed' as one Idea (like the hordes do)

Naval Warfare and mechanics:
- Why privateering mission does NOT give NT ??? (naval tratidion) ?? Even trading mission gives, why not privateering?
- Why cant we Loot a coastal province with our boats? Imagine how much difference that would be, finally having a navy just got interesting.

Thats it, my friends, have a good time plundering! YaRRr!

EDIT : Just got an idea, how about the possibility of giving me a negative bonus (AKA malus) to ideas for some nice points to expend elsewhere in nation designer, like we can do with leaders.
Then i would do something like : Most wanted of the caribean: -2 to diplomatic reputation, but giving us for +- 15 points ??? That would be even better
